The massive Fortress of Louisbourg, built between 1719 and 1745, symbolized French power but was twice captured by the British — first in 1745 and again in 1758, after which its walls were demolished.

The town was later resettled as a modest fishing village, evolving through coal exports and maritime activity in the 19th century.
