Once home to some of the deepest coal mines in Canada, Springhill’s history includes the major mining disasters of 1891, 1956, and the 1958 “bump,” events that left a lasting mark on the town and are honoured today at the Springhill Miners’ Museum and the national historic site.

It’s also the birthplace of Anne Murray, one of Canada’s most celebrated voices, whose story is showcased at the Anne Murray Centre on Main Street. Beneath the town, the flooded mine workings now power an innovative geothermal system that heats and cools the local industrial park — a modern use of Springhill’s underground past.

Sitting high on the Cobequid slopes at roughly 650–700 feet of elevation, Springhill blends heritage, ingenuity, and community pride in a way that feels both grounded and forward‑looking.
